It’s #NationalApprenticeshipWeek, and what better time to talk about the benefits of an apprenticeship within the engineering industry.

If you’re leaving school this summer, we all know that it can be very confusing deciding what to do once your GCSEs or A-Level exams are over. There is a lot of pressure on young people to go to university, especially if you’re thinking of starting a career in engineering. However, you might not be aware that there are plenty of advantages to an engineering apprenticeship, an alternative option that can help you build a career within this sector. 

Apprenticeships give you the best of both worlds, they combine the studying aspect, that you would have otherwise been taught in university, with a full-time job role. To help you figure out if an apprenticeship is right for you, we’ve listed some of the benefits below to help you make that all-important decision!

Apprenticeships help develop your skills

We’ve spoken a lot about developing concern over an engineering recruitment crisis.  With the UK demand for skilled engineers at a possible all-time high, there has never been a better time to train to become one.

Building relationships in work and training provide a good atmosphere and opportunity to share ideas and develop skills via colleagues and fellow apprentices. Companies such as ABB and Schneider Electric are constantly on the lookout for candidates who possess these valuable skills.

Gain practical experience

As we mentioned above, apprenticeships combine both the learning and practical experiences needed to become an engineer. They offer a structured programme of essential theoretical learning, as well as practical hands-on experience. 

Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to be placed alongside experienced professionals within the engineering sector.  Working with these professionals will not only gain you valuable insight, but it will help make you feel at home as an engineer.

Earning potential

As an apprentice, you’ll get paid at least the UK minimum apprenticeship wage of £3.90 per hour. Not only that, but you’ll also not find yourself in debt with university fees, like most engineering graduates!

As for long term earning potential, there are fantastic opportunities to earn a good wage as an engineer. One thing that is given in this sector, is that wages for engineers hold up extremely well against other career options. Past research has even shown that apprentices, on average, earn over £100K more throughout their lifetime than other working employees.

Progress with a company

There’s a good chance that if an engineering firm offers you the chance to complete an apprenticeship with them, they also see potential in you, and will hope to keep you in the business once your training is complete. 

Apprenticeships give you the chance to progress within your chosen company and help you set yourself up for a successful future. Compared to other alternatives, such as university courses, this is a far more secure way to ensure a good career at the end of learning.
